Liz Hjorth’s Scooter sailing in the Pacific Ocean. Scooter is a Capo 26. Scooter’s summer Wednesday night sailing season is 22 weeks long, with 80+ boats competing in various classes for the overall season trophy, the Marilyn Ritchie Trophy. Scooter won this trophy in 2015 and placed 2nd in 2014 and 2016. Not a J/70, but a fun boat to sail!
Team Scooter’s skipper Liz Hjorth sailed her first International Women’s Keelboat Championship in 1995 as crew on the J/24 in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1997 she skippered a J/24 in the IWKC and finished mid-fleet. In 1999 she again skippered a J/24 in the IWKC, but had a greatly improved 7th place finish. The next IWKC in 2001 the boat and location were changed to the J/22 in Annapolis; Liz’s team finished mid-fleet. Around this time, Liz was introduced to match racing. Liz then decided not to attend later IWKC events, but shifted her attention to start participating in match racing which she continued until 2015.
In 2016 Liz started racing as a helmsperson on an all woman J/70 team in Southern California J/70 events. Because she loves sailing the J/70, Liz decided to put together her own crew for the newly reinstated 2016 IWKC in Rye, New York, and finished 9th place overall.
Liz thought 2016 marked her final IWKC, but when she heard that Valle de Bravo, Mexico, was chosen as the 2017 IWKC venue she just had to apply. Liz had heard of Valle de Bravo from her early J/24 days and hoped to some day sail on the high mountain lake southwest of Mexico City. Liz is excited to finally get to race in a regatta in Valle de Bravo, Mexico!
